OMV and Pa&Co: innovative technological solutions for sustainable roads

  • Rehabilitation and extension of Ploiesti West Belt, Romania's first major work done entirely with polymer modified bitumen

  • Works are done in partnership by Pa&Co International, as the performer of the works, and OMV Romania Mineraloel, as a supplier of bitumen

  • For more than three years, the partnership between OMV and Pa&Co bring on to the Romanian market innovative solutions for road construction

Rehabilitation and expansion of Ploiesti West Belt is the first major investment in Romania made entirely of polymer modified bitumen, the product being used both in the wear layer and the interlayer (binder). The performer of the contract, Pa&Co International, together with the manufacturer of this technological solutions, OMV company, decided the use of polymer modified bitumen due to the excellent properties of this product, which gives increased road durability and results in a significant reduction in maintenance works.

Works at Ploiesti West Belt are made on a length of 12.8 kilometers, the road being extended from two to four lanes. On 23 June 2009 an asphalt carpet with polymer modified bitumen (interlayer - binder), on a surface of 18,000 square meters, representing 1.4 km of the total of works. The polymer modified bitumen provided by OMV is produced in Austria and worked at production of asphalt mixtures base from Tartasesti owned by Pa&Co International, where the formulation is carefully monitored. OMV Bitumen is made to European standards, all polymer modified bitumen OMV brand complying with the requests and EN 14023 specifications (European standard for polymer modified bitumen).

“OMV did not want just a customer who would buy the product, but a partner to ensure that it is well highlighted. On the other hand, we were tracking to have the certainty that the product is of high quality. Centura Ploiesti Vest will demonstrate the partnership that we have made has as bond the quality," said Dan Balcanu, administrator of Pa&Co International. Pa&Co is the first Romanian company to use polymer bitumen to make the Formula 3 Bucharest Ring track, and that has modern equipment and trained professionals to successfully apply this innovative solution. In addition, the company has its own laboratory, which can provide a very strict quality control, essential for the final success of the works.

"We are pleased that our partners from Pa&Co International realised the necessity of using a advanced product, best quality. Opting for the use of polymer modified bitumen produced by OMV, the beneficiary will receive a work with a lifetime double than if they used ordinary bitumen and maintenance work will be greatly reduced, allowing the optimization of maintenance costs," said Remus Hîrceagă, Commercial Country Coordinator, OMV Romania Mineraloel. OMV has provided polymer modified bitumen for other construction in Romania too, such as asphalt Bucharest Ring Formula 3 circuit.

Tests made jointly by the two partners, Pa&Co and OMV, for rehabilitation and expansion project of Ploiesti West Belt began in 2008 when they made the first probation that targeted the quality of equipment and facilities, and also the ability of specialists to use the new product, polymer modified bitumen.

Collaboration between OMV and Pa&Co lasts of more than three years and has seen a continuous development in products and services area. The evolution of the partnership will continue with the completion of works on the Bucharest – Brasov highway, Moara Vlasiei – Ploiesti sector, where Pa&Co International is building a section for which will use the new polymer modified bitumen OMV brand.

Replacing the classic bitumen with polymer modified bitumen in the process of construction or rehabilitation of roads has clear advantages in terms of quality and those of maintenance, advantages demonstrated by the use of this product on large scale in European Union countries. Thus, Romania's roads can have a double lifetime, and maintenance costs can be reduced significantly from the application of a modern technology, represented by the use of polymer modified bitumen at European standards.
